Healing Properties of Cedar

Posted September 6, 2016

We had our first “staycation” as our roof was replaced in August. It was an interesting process. Originally, we spoke with Bryan Ruelens from Testarossa Roofing about regular singles and Enviroshakes®, which are made of 95% recycled materials. He happened to mention cedar was another permanent roofing product (50 to 80 year life span). From the time I held the cedar shake, there was no going back to regular shingles or the Enviroshakes®.

The feel and smell of the Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata) was the deciding factor. The cedar still contained life and energy, whereas the other products felt dead and lifeless.

After we agreed to having a new cedar roof installed, I researched the healing properties of cedar and it is no surprise that the leak from the roof into the treatment room needed to be fixed with cedar. In Salish, Western red cedar means “Long Life Giver”, “Rich Woman Maker” and “Mother” (Elise Krohn). It is a strong antimicrobial (bacteria, fungus, virus), immune system builder, and respiratory system healer. Of particular interest was “Indigenous tribes of the Pacific Northwest believed that sleeping beneath a Western Red Cedar would evoke vivid dreams” (Stephen Christensen (MD), 2012).

Take a deep breath the next time you walk up to our home for a session, workshop or visit and feel the healing power of cedar filling your body.
